Perky Pearl was never supposed to become famous.

At least, that’s what everyone in Willow Creek told her when she opened Pearl’s Perk & Gossip Café thirty years ago. They said nobody needed a coffee shop where the owner knew everyone’s business before they did.

They were wrong.

Pearl built her empire one cup of coffee and one juicy story at a time.

But her real secret weapon wasn’t the coffee.

It was Latte.

Latte arrived at the café as a tiny rescue puppy with a permanent look of disapproval and a talent for spotting trouble before it happened. If someone walked into the café with bad intentions, Latte’s ears twitched. If a customer was about to make a terrible life decision, Latte somehow knew.

Together, they became an unofficial advice team.

Then one Tuesday morning, everything changed.

Pearl was enjoying her third iced coffee when the old rotary phone rang.

Not her cell phone.

Not the café phone.

The old phone.

The one that hadn’t worked in years.

Pearl answered.

“Hello?”

A frantic voice shouted, “Pearl! We need your help!”

The caller explained that the town’s annual festival was in chaos. The mayor had disappeared, the pie contest was missing its winning pie, and someone had released three goats into the petting zoo.

Pearl gasped.

Latte narrowed her eyes.

This was serious.

Within minutes, the pair were on the case.

Pearl gathered clues while Latte silently judged every suspect. The more suspicious a person acted, the bigger Latte’s side-eye became.

By sunset, they had solved the mystery.

The mayor had wandered into the quilting competition, the pie had been hidden by a rival baker, and the goats had escaped because they figured out how to unlatch a gate.

The town declared Pearl and Latte local heroes.

From that day forward, whenever something strange happened, the phone rang.

And every time Pearl picked it up, Latte climbed onto her lap, adjusted her glasses, and prepared to judge the situation accordingly.

Now the pair spend their days solving small-town mysteries, drinking iced coffee, rescuing animals, and collecting enough gossip to fill three newspapers.

Pearl insists they’re simply concerned citizens.

Latte knows they’re legends.
